Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.2 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function public_key_verify_signature in the library lib/asn1_decoder.c of the component ASN.1 BER Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability (Panic). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The asn1_ber_decoder function in lib/asn1_decoder.c in the Linux kernel before 4.3 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (panic) via an ASN.1 BER file that lacks a public key, leading to mishandling by the public_key_verify_signature function in crypto/asymmetric_keys/public_key.c.
The weakness was shared 05/02/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-2053 since 01/25/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93278 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:2006-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168927 (OpenSuSE Security Update for the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2016:1641-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (93278). The entries VDB-87126, VDB-87304, VDB-87608 and VDB-87611 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
