Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.6 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function snd_timer_user_params of the file sound/core/timer.c of the component ALSA Timer Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The snd_timer_user_params function in sound/core/timer.c in the Linux kernel through 4.6 does not initialize a certain data structure, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via crafted use of the ALSA timer interface.
The weakness was presented 05/23/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-4569 since 05/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
