Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (version unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 09/14/2004 by Nick DeBaggis with verizon.net as MS04-028 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0200 since 03/11/2004. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by FoToZ and been published 1 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at gulftech.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14834 (Radmin (Remote Administrator) Port 10002 - Possible GDI Compromise), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Backdoors. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110027 (Microsoft Office GDI+ JPEG Processing Vulnerability (MS04-028)).
Applying the patch MS04-028 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2707. In this case the pattern |FF| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2992.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16304), Exploit-DB (472), Tenable (14834), SecurityFocus (BID 11173†) and OSVDB (9951†). astalavista.ch is providing further details. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
