A vulnerability has been found in OpenBSD 1.1.60/1.2.40 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function sprintf of the component Perl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 01/05/2006 by Steven M. Christey with OpenBSD (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openbsd.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3912. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21504 (FreeBSD : perl, webmin, usermin -- perl format string integer wrap vulnerability (bb33981a-7ac6-11da-bf72-00123f589060)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
