X.Org X server before 1.13.4 and 1.4.x before 1.14.1 does not properly restrict access to input events when adding a new hot-plug device, which might allow physically proximate attackers to obtain sensitive information, as demonstrated by reading passwords from a tty.
The weakness was disclosed 04/17/2013 by David Airlie and Peter Hutterer with Red Hat as not defined advisory (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1940 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74992 (openSUSE Security Update : xorg-x11-server (openSUSE-SU-2013:0937-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166889 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xorg-x11-server (SUSE-SU-2014:0744-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
