Linux Kernel Function/Stack Tracer set_ftrace_pid/set_graph_function null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel. Impacted is the function set_ftrace_pid/set_graph_function of the component Function/Stack Tracer. The manipulation leads to null pointer dereference. In addition, an exploit is available. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). This issue affects the function set_ftrace_pid/set_graph_function of the component Function/Stack Tracer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability.

The weakness was presented 04/12/2013 by Prasad J Pandit as Bug 952197 - Kernel: tracing: NULL pointer dereference as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The public release happened without involvement of Linux. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at OSVDB (92526†). openwall.com is providing further details. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
