Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator up to 4.6.5 (Endpoint Management Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) before 4.5.7 and 4.6.x before 4.6.6 allows remote attackers to upload arbitrary files via a crafted request over the Agent-Server communication channel, as demonstrated by writing to the Software/ directory.
The weakness was disclosed 04/26/2013 by Thierry Zoller and Jerome Nokin with Verizon Enterprise Solutions (GCIS Vulnerability Management) as SB10042 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kc.mcafee.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0141 since 12/06/2012. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed by st3n and been published 2 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66319 (McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator 4.6.x Multiple Vulnerabilities (SB10042)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121260 (McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83821), Exploit-DB (33071), Tenable (66319), SecurityFocus (BID 59505†) and OSVDB (92801†). h-online.com is providing further details.
