Details
A vulnerability was found in D-Link DIR-635 up to 2.34EU (Router Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component ping. The manipulation of the argument data with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 11/01/2012. The weakness was disclosed 04/25/2013 by Michael Messner (m1k3) with s3cur1ty as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at s3cur1ty.de. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Michael Messner and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 175 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (25024), OSVDB (92843†) and Secunia (SA53232†). The entries VDB-7580 and VDB-8566 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
