Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.8.8 (Operating System). Affected is the function set_ftrace_pid/set_graph_function of the component CAP_SYS_ADMIN. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The ftrace implementation in the Linux kernel before 3.8.8 allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging the CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability for write access to the (1) set_ftrace_pid or (2) set_graph_function file, and then making an lseek system call.
The weakness was presented 04/12/2013 by Prasad J Pandit with Red Hat Security Response Team as not defined mailinglist post (Maillist). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-3301 since 04/28/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70222 (Amazon Linux AMI : kernel (ALAS-2013-218)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350526 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-218).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
