Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.7.2 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is the function ext4_orphan_del of the file fs/ext4/namei.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ext4_orphan_del function in fs/ext4/namei.c in the Linux kernel before 3.7.3 does not properly handle orphan-list entries for non-journal filesystems, which allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (system hang) via a crafted filesystem on removable media, as demonstrated by the e2fsprogs tests/f_orphan_extents_inode/image.gz test.
The weakness was shared 12/27/2012 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The public release happened without involvement of Linux. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2015 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at git.kernel.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70837 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2013:265)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168771 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:1203-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.kernel.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83851), Tenable (70837), SecurityFocus (BID 59512†), OSVDB (92851†) and Secunia (SA53411†). The entries VDB-7933, VDB-7934, VDB-8173 and VDB-8485 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
