This vulnerability appears as CVE-2013-3302. There is no available exploit. The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 3.7.2 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file fs/cifs/transport.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Race condition in the smb_send_rqst function in fs/cifs/transport.c in the Linux kernel before 3.7.2 allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and OOPS) or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors involving a reconnection event.
The weakness was presented 12/30/2012 by Oliver Mapssinger (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3302 since 04/28/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 3.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
