A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.7 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the file fs/cifs/transport.c of the component CIFS File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was disclosed 12/30/2012 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Applying the patch ea702b80e0bbb2448e201472127288beb82ca2fe is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
