A vulnerability was found in Google Authenticator 0.86/0.87/0.91. It has been declared as problematic. pam_google_authenticator.c in the PAM module in Google Authenticator before 1.0 requires user-readable permissions for the secret file, which allows local users to bypass intended access restrictions and discover a shared secret via standard filesystem operations, a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-0258.
The weakness was released 09/22/2012 by Fabio Liambotis as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-6140 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

Applying the patch c3414e9857ad64e52283f3266065ef3023fc69a8 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at code.google.com.
