A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GNU Samba (File Transfer Software). Affected is the function unix_clean_name. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. The unix_clean_name function in Samba 2.2.x through 2.2.11, and 3.0.x before 3.0.2a, trims certain directory names down to absolute paths, which could allow remote attackers to bypass the specified share restrictions and read, write, or list arbitrary files via "/.////" style sequences in pathnames.
The weakness was presented 09/30/2004 by Karol Wiesek with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is available at idefense.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0815 since 08/25/2004.
