Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to a deleted object, aka "Internet Explorer Use After Free Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-1303 and CVE-2013-1304.

The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was shared 04/24/2013 as MS13-028 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1338 since 01/12/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4416 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65875 (MS13-028: Security Update for Internet Explorer (2817183)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100145 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-028)).

Applying the patch MS13-028 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.
