A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Redhat Nagios XI 3.4.4 (Log Management Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file nagios.upgrade_to_v3.sh of the component Core. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. nagios.upgrade_to_v3.sh, as distributed by Red Hat and possibly others for Nagios Core 3.4.4, 3.5.1, and earlier, allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on a temporary nagioscfg file with a predictable name in /tmp/.

The weakness was presented 04/30/2013 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2029 since 02/19/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
