Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 8 does not properly restrict data access by VBScript, which allows remote attackers to perform cross-domain reading of JSON files via a crafted web site, aka "JSON Array Information Disclosure Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 05/14/2013 by Yosuke Hasegawa as MS13-037 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1297 since 01/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66412 (MS13-037: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2829530)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100147 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-037)).
Applying the patch MS13-037 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable ActiveX Controls. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12920.
