A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9/10 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function CDispNode::InsertSiblingNode. Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to a deleted object, aka "Internet Explorer Use After Free Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-1308 and CVE-2013-2551.
The bug was discovered 11/01/2012. The weakness was released 05/14/2013 by Berend-Jan Wever (SkyLined) as MS13-037 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1309 since 01/12/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 194 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66412 (MS13-037: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2829530)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100147 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-037)).
Applying the patch MS13-037 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12908.
