Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to a deleted object, aka "Internet Explorer Use After Free Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was presented 05/14/2013 by Scott Bell with Security-Assessment.com as MS13-037 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1311 since 01/12/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at security-assessment.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1896 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66412 (MS13-037: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2829530)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100147 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-037)).
Applying the patch MS13-037 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12927.
