A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Windows 8/RT/Server 2012 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file HTTP.sys. HTTP.sys in Microsoft Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted HTTP header, aka "HTTP.sys Denial of Service Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2013 by Marok Kroemeke with ZDI as MS13-039 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1305 since 01/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a private exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/28/2024).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66414 (MS13-039: Vulnerability in HTTP.sys Could Allow Denial of Service (2829254)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90884 (Microsoft Windows HTTP.sys Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS13-039)).
Applying the patch MS13-039 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12913.
