A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3 (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block of the component PUB File Handler. The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2013 by Will Dorman with CERT as MS13-042 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1317 since 01/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66417 (MS13-042: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2830397)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110210 (Multiple Microsoft Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-042)).
Applying the patch MS13-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
