A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Publisher 2003 SP3 (Image Processing Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component PUB File Handler. The weakness was published 05/14/2013 by Will Dorman with CERT as MS13-042 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1320 since 01/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66417 (MS13-042: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2830397)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110210 (Multiple Microsoft Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-042)).
Applying the patch MS13-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
