A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft Windows 64-bit SP2/XP SP3 (Operating System). Affected is some unknown processing of the file win32k.sys. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Win32k Window Handle Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2013 with iDEFENSE as MS13-046 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1334 since 01/12/2013. Local access is required to approach this attack. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66422 (MS13-046: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2840221)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90887 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities (MS13-046)).
Applying the patch MS13-046 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
