A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Malware Protection Engine 1.1.9402.0 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been rated as critical. mpengine.dll in Microsoft Malware Protection Engine before 1.1.9506.0 on x64 platforms allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted file.
The weakness was disclosed 05/14/2013 as 2846338 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1346 since 01/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Avast! Antivirus as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. According to Microsoft, the update should be automatically applied within 48 hours by the built-in mechanism for the automatic detection and deployment of updates.
