Apache HTTP Server Log File Terminal Escape Sequence Filtering mod_rewrite.c do_rewritelog cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server (Web Server) (the affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function do_rewritelog of the file modules/mappers/mod_rewrite.c of the component Log File Terminal Escape Sequence Filtering. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

mod_rewrite.c in the mod_rewrite module in the Apache HTTP Server 2.2.x before 2.2.25 writes data to a log file without sanitizing non-printable characters, which might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via an HTTP request containing an escape sequence for a terminal emulator.

The weakness was released 05/13/2013 by Joe Orton (Amir) as RHSA-2013:0815-1 as confirmed advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). The advisory is available at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1862 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67194 (FreeBSD : apache22 -- several vulnerabilities (f3d24aee-e5ad-11e2-b183-20cf30e32f6d)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123974 (IBM WebSphere Application Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (swg21644047)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84111), Tenable (67194), SecurityFocus (BID 59826†), OSVDB (93366†) and Secunia (SA53262†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-7600, VDB-9320, VDB-9321 and VDB-9324. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
