Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 9.3.1 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Disk Images. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Disk Images subsystem in Apple iOS before 9.3.2, OS X before 10.11.5, tvOS before 9.2.1, and watchOS before 2.2.1 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted app.
The weakness was disclosed 05/16/2016 by Jack Tang (moony li) with Trend Micro as HT206568 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-1808 since 01/13/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/04/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future. The advisory points out:
A memory corruption issue existed in the parsing of disk images. This issue was addressed through improved memory handling.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91228 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
