A vulnerability has been found in Apple iOS up to 9.3.1 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component IOAcceleratorFamily. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
IOAcceleratorFamily in Apple iOS before 9.3.2, OS X before 10.11.5, and tvOS before 9.2.1 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via a crafted app.
The weakness was disclosed 05/16/2016 by Juwei Lin (lokihardt) with TrendMicro as HT206568 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-1814 since 01/13/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
A null pointer dereference was addressed through improved locking.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91228 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122912 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.5 and Security Update 2016-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-05-16-4)).
Upgrading to version 9.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
