A vulnerability has been found in PHP up to 5.5.34/5.6.20/7.0.5 (Programming Language Software) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function exif_process_TIFF_in_JPEG of the file ext/exif/exif.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The exif_process_TIFF_in_JPEG function in ext/exif/exif.c in PHP before 5.5.35, 5.6.x before 5.6.21, and 7.x before 7.0.6 does not validate TIFF start data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted header data.
The weakness was disclosed 05/22/2016 by Hanno Boeck as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.php.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-4544 since 05/05/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11623 (PHP Versions Prior to 5.6.21/5.5.35 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 5.5.35, 5.6.21 or 7.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
