Summary
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Cisco IOS XE and IOS XR. Affected is an unknown function of the component IPv6 Packet Handler. This manipulation causes input validation. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2016-1409. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Cisco IOS XE and IOS XR (Router Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component IPv6 Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability.
The weakness was published 05/25/2016 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20160525-ipv6 / CSCuz66542 / CSCuz79330 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-1409 since 01/04/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/07/2024). The advisory points out:
A vulnerability in the IP Version 6 (IPv6) packet processing functions of Cisco IOS XR Software and Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause an affected device to stop processing IPv6 traffic, leading to a denial of service (DoS) condition on the device. The vulnerability is due to insufficient processing logic for crafted IPv6 packets that are sent to an affected device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted IPv6 Neighbor Discovery packets to an affected device for processing. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the device to stop processing IPv6 traffic, leading to a DoS condition on the device.
It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91762 (Juniper Junos IPv6 Neighbor Discovery (ND) Traffic Handling Multiple Vulnerabilities (JSA10749)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316007 (Cisco IOS IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Crafted Packet Denial of Service Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20160525-ipv6)).
A possible mitigation has been published 12 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Zero-Day.cz (438), Tenable (91762), SecurityFocus (BID 90872†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1035965†). Similar entry is available at VDB-90860. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
