Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in GNU C Library up to 2.23 (Software Library). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Name Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the glob implementation in GNU C Library (aka glibc) before 2.24, when GLOB_ALTDIRFUNC is used, allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a long name.
The weakness was presented 06/01/2016 by Alexander Cherepanov (Website). The advisory is available at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-1234 since 12/27/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91361 (Debian DLA-494-1 : eglibc security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276114 (Fedora Security Update for glibc (FEDORA-2016-68abc0be35)).
Upgrading to version 2.24 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
