Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library (Software Library) (version unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function getaddrinfo of the file sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the getaddrinfo function in sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via vectors involving hostent conversion. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2013-4458.
The weakness was released 06/10/2016 with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-3706 since 03/30/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91361 (Debian DLA-494-1 : eglibc security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168903 (OpenSuSE Security Update for glibc (openSUSE-SU-2016:1527-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
