Details
A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version now known). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function get_cmd of the file hw/scsi/esp.c of the component Non-DMA Mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The get_cmd function in hw/scsi/esp.c in QEMU might allow local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write and QEMU process crash) via vectors related to reading from the information transfer buffer in non-DMA mode.
The weakness was shared 06/14/2016 by Li Qiang (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-5238 since 06/02/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
