Details
A vulnerability was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ohci_bus_start of the file hw/usb/hcd-ohci.c of the component USB OHCI Emulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ohci_bus_start function in the USB OHCI emulation support (hw/usb/hcd-ohci.c) in QEMU allows local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and QEMU process crash) via vectors related to multiple eof_timers.
The weakness was presented 06/16/2016 by Alibaba (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-2391 since 02/16/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
