Details
A vulnerability was found in QEMU up to 2.5.0 (Virtualization Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function is_rndis of the file hw/usb/dev-network.c of the component USB Net Device Emulator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The is_rndis function in the USB Net device emulator (hw/usb/dev-network.c) in QEMU before 2.5.1 does not properly validate USB configuration descriptor objects, which allows local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and QEMU process crash) via vectors involving a remote NDIS control message packet.
The weakness was shared 06/16/2016 by Prasad J Pandit (Website). The advisory is available at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-2392 since 02/16/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
