Details
A vulnerability was found in mDNSResponder up to 625.41.1. It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function GetValueForIPv4Addr. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in mDNSResponder before 625.41.2 allow remote attackers to read or write to out-of-bounds memory locations via vectors involving the (1) GetValueForIPv4Addr, (2) GetValueForMACAddr, (3) rfc3110_import, or (4) CopyNSEC3ResourceRecord function.
The weakness was presented 06/26/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-7987 since 10/27/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/11/2024).
