Details
A vulnerability was found in mDNSResponder up to 625.41.1. It has been classified as very critical. Affected is the function GetValueForMACAddr. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in mDNSResponder before 625.41.2 allow remote attackers to read or write to out-of-bounds memory locations via vectors involving the (1) GetValueForIPv4Addr, (2) GetValueForMACAddr, (3) rfc3110_import, or (4) CopyNSEC3ResourceRecord function.
The weakness was shared 06/26/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-7987 since 10/27/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
