Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/Server 2003 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 08/16/2004. The weakness was presented 10/12/2004 by Lucas Lavarello and Juliano Rizzo with Core Security Technologies as MS04-036 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0574 since 06/15/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Lucas Lavarello and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 57 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15465 (MS04-036: Microsoft NNTP Component Remote Overflow (883935) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90185 (Microsoft NNTP Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS04-036)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS04-036 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3078. In this case the pattern SEARCH is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3051.
