A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in phpMyAdmin up to 4.0.10.15/4.4.15.6/4.6.2 (Database Administration Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file setup/frames/index.inc.php of the component BBcode Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. setup/frames/index.inc.php in phpMyAdmin 4.0.10.x before 4.0.10.16, 4.4.15.x before 4.4.15.7, and 4.6.x before 4.6.3 allows remote attackers to conduct BBCode injection attacks against HTTP sessions via a crafted URI.
The weakness was disclosed 07/03/2016 by Emanuel Bronshtein (Website). The advisory is available at phpmyadmin.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-5701 since 06/16/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1055 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175793 (Debian Security Update for phpmyadmin (DSA 3627-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.0.10.16, 4.4.15.7 or 4.6.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
