Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.2.2 (Virtualization Software). This vulnerability affects the function XSAVE/XRSTOR. The manipulation of the argument FOP/FIP/FDP x87 Registers with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Xen 4.0.x, 4.1.x, and 4.2.x, when running on AMD64 processors, only save/restore the FOP, FIP, and FDP x87 registers in FXSAVE/FXRSTOR when an exception is pending, which allows one domain to determine portions of the state of floating point instructions of other domains, which can be leveraged to obtain sensitive information such as cryptographic keys, a similar vulnerability to CVE-2006-1056. NOTE: this is the documented behavior of AMD64 processors, but it is inconsistent with Intel processors in a security-relevant fashion that was not addressed by the kernels.
The weakness was presented 06/03/2013 with Xen.org Security Team as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2076 since 02/19/2013. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69297 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : Xen (SAT Patch Number 8063)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166413 (OpenSuSE Security Update for XEN (openSUSE-SU-2013:1392-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
