Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.2.2 Page Reference Counting resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.2.2 (Virtualization Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component Page Reference Counting. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Xen 4.1.x and 4.2.x, when the XSA-45 patch is in place, does not properly maintain references on pages stored for deferred cleanup, which allows local PV guest kernels to cause a denial of service (premature page free and hypervisor crash) or possible gain privileges via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was presented 06/26/2013 by Andrew Cooper as XSA-45 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1432 since 01/26/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:

Malicious or buggy PV guest kernels can mount a denial of service attack affecting the whole system. It can't be excluded that this could also be exploited to mount a privilege escalation attack.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67327 (Fedora 17 : xen-4.1.5-9.fc17 (2013-11871)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166813 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Xen (SUSE-SU-2014:0446-1)).

Applying the patch xsa58-4.1.patch/xsa58-4.2.patch/xsa58-unstable.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at seclists.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The mailinglist post contains the following remark:

Running only HVM guests, or PV guests with trusted kernels, will avoid this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85317), Tenable (67327), SecurityFocus (BID 60277†), OSVDB (94600†) and Secunia (SA53925†). See VDB-8812, VDB-8938, VDB-8939 and VDB-9254 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
