Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.5 Kernel null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.5 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The kernel in Apple iOS before 9.3.3, OS X before 10.11.6, tvOS before 9.2.2, and watchOS before 2.2.2 allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 07/18/2016 by Shrek_wzw with CESG as HT206903 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-1865 since 01/13/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:

A null pointer dereference was addressed through improved input validation.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92496 (Mac OS X 10.11.x < 10.11.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370095 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.6 and Security Update 2016-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2016-07-18-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.11.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (92496) and SecurityFocus (BID 91828†). The entries VDB-88079, VDB-89684, VDB-89686 and VDB-89687 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
