Oracle MICROS Retail XBRi Loss Prevention up to 10.8.1 command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Oracle MICROS Retail XBRi Loss Prevention up to 10.8.1. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Retail. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Apache Struts 2.x before 2.3.20.2, 2.3.24.x before 2.3.24.2, and 2.3.28.x before 2.3.28.1, when Dynamic Method Invocation is enabled, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via method: prefix, related to chained expressions.

The bug was discovered 04/21/2016. The weakness was disclosed 07/19/2016 by Nike Zheng as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - July 2016 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-3081 since 03/10/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/09/2024). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90773 (Apache Struts 2.x < 2.3.28.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 150154 (Apache Struts Dynamic Method Invocation Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (S2-032)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (39756), Tenable (90773) and SecurityFocus (BID 87327†). The entries VDB-82789, VDB-82790, VDB-87717 and VDB-89967 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
