The weakness was presented 07/26/2016 by Andrew Cooper with Citrix as XSA-183 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-6259 since 07/20/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:
Supervisor Mode Access Prevention is a hardware feature designed to make an Operating System more robust, by raising a pagefault rather than accidentally following a pointer into userspace. However, legitimate accesses into userspace require whitelisting, and the exception delivery mechanism for 32bit PV guests wasn't whitelisted.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92675 (FreeBSD : xen-kernel -- x86: Missing SMAP whitelisting in 32-bit exception / event delivery (04cf89e3-5854-11e6-b334-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169239 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:2473-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (92675), SecurityFocus (BID 92130†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1036447†).
