Details
A vulnerability was found in Perl 0.70/0.71/0.72 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component CPAN Module::Signature Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
The cpansign verify functionality in the Module::Signature module before 0.72 for Perl allows attackers to bypass the signature check and execute arbitrary code via a SIGNATURE file with a "special unknown cipher" that references an untrusted module in Digest/.
The weakness was published 06/05/2013 by Florian Weimer with Red Hat Security Response Team as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2145 since 02/19/2013. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67282 (Fedora 18 : perl-Module-Signature-0.73-1.fc18 (2013-10430)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166432 (OpenSuSE Security Update for perl-Module-Signature (openSUSE-SU-2013:1178-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.72 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (84896), Tenable (67282), SecurityFocus (BID 60352†), OSVDB (94060†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40255†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
