A vulnerability was found in PHP 5.3.25/5.4.15 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function php_quot_print_encode of the file ext/standard/quot_print.c of the component String Handler. The manipulation with the input value str_repeat("\xf4", 1000) leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. Heap-based buffer overflow in the php_quot_print_encode function in ext/standard/quot_print.c in PHP before 5.3.26 and 5.4.x before 5.4.16 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted argument to the quoted_printable_encode function.
The weakness was released 06/06/2013 by stas as Sec Bug #64879 as not defined bug report (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.php.net. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2110 since 02/19/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. A public exploit has been developed by stas in PHP and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at bugs.php.net. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69763 (Amazon Linux AMI : php (ALAS-2013-205)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 5.3.26 or 5.4.16 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch Patch quotedfix for Strings related Bug #64879 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugs.php.net. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with ASP, JSP or CGI as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
