Details
A vulnerability was found in PHP 5.3.25/5.4.15 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function php_quot_print_encode of the file ext/standard/quot_print.c of the component Mimetype Handler. The manipulation as part of a MP3 File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. Heap-based buffer overflow in the php_quot_print_encode function in ext/standard/quot_print.c in PHP before 5.3.26 and 5.4.x before 5.4.16 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted argument to the quoted_printable_encode function.
The weakness was disclosed 06/06/2013 by bluewind as Bug #64830 - mimetype detection segfaults on mp3 file as not defined bug report (Website). The advisory is available at bugs.php.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2110 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by bluewind in MP3 Audio File and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at flo.server-speed.net. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69763 (Amazon Linux AMI : php (ALAS-2013-205)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121868 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 17.5.0 Missing).
Upgrading to version 5.4.16 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with ASP, JSP or CGI as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13182.
