lighttpd up to 1.4.27 on Linux Configuration File Temporary Files cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in lighttpd on Linux (Web Server). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file Temporary Files of the component Configuration File. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

The configuration file for the FastCGI PHP support for lighthttpd before 1.4.28 on Debian GNU/Linux creates a socket file with a predictable name in /tmp, which allows local users to hijack the PHP control socket and perform unauthorized actions such as forcing the use of a different version of PHP via a symlink attack or a race condition.

The weakness was released 03/15/2013 by Stefan Bühler as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at debian.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1427 since 01/26/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65585 (Debian DSA-2649-1 : lighttpd - fixed socket name in world-writable directory), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121868 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 17.5.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.4.31-4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82897), Tenable (65585), SecurityFocus (BID 58528†), OSVDB (91462†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38905†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-5794, VDB-9061, VDB-9062 and VDB-12787. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
