A vulnerability was found in Apache POI up to 3.13. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component XLSX2CSV Example. The manipulation as part of a OpenXML Document leads to a xml external entity reference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-611. The product processes an XML document that can contain XML entities with URIs that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. The XLSX2CSV example in Apache POI before 3.14 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a crafted OpenXML document containing an external entity declaration in conjunction with an entity reference, related to an XML External Entity (XXE) issue.
The weakness was published 08/05/2016 by Mauro Gentile with Minded Security (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-5000 since 05/24/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
Upgrading to version 3.14 eliminates this vulnerability.
