A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 2.0.3 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code block of the file epan/dissectors/packet-pktap.c of the component Ethernet Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
epan/dissectors/packet-pktap.c in the Ethernet dissector in Wireshark 2.x before 2.0.4 mishandles the packet-header data type, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was disclosed 08/07/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (iDefense) with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-5358 since 06/09/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91928 (FreeBSD : wireshark -- multiple vulnerabilities (313e9557-41e8-11e6-ab34-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168918 (OpenSuSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2016:1612-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (91928) and SecurityFocus (BID 91140†). The entries VDB-80763, VDB-88027, VDB-90422 and VDB-90619 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
