A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in PostgreSQL up to 9.1.22/9.2.17/9.3.13/9.4.8/9.5.3 (Database Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the component CASE/WHEN Handler. The manipulation as part of a SQL Query leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370195 (Red Hat Update for rh-postgresql94-postgresql (RHSA-2016:1781)).
Upgrading to version 9.1.23, 9.2.18, 9.3.14, 9.4.9 or 9.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
